Proper Hermit Crab Tanks

When you first buy a hermit crab the petstore or little shop will recommend, give you, or tell you to buy a small plastic cage with a plastic lid. These are refered to as Kritter Keepers. DO NOT keep your hermit crabs in these cages. They do not hold the correct humidity and temperature. They sizes range from 0.25- 1 full gallon. This does not give your crab the room they need for their food, water dishes, extra shells, etc. The minimum for hermit crabs is a 10 gallon glass tank. The tank can hold about 3 or 4 small crabs, but as they grow you will need to upgrade. A good time to upgrade is the Petco or PetSmart dollar per gallon sale. Fish tanks will work best, they are sealed well so water doesnt escape, but in our case crabs. I would mostly recommend using a long unless you would like to build a nice, sturdy 2nd level, which are not easy to build, you can use a tall. The long tanks will allow your hermit crabs lots of room to crawl and are also tall enough for climbing decor. Along with a proper tank you will need a proper lid. I would not use a glass lid. If your tank gets to hot there is no way the heat can escape. I have always used a a screen lid. Your hermit crabs can climb on them, and all you have to do is cover it 5/6th of the way with saran wrap. This will keep your humidity and heat in. The 1/6 allows heat circulation. Just tape the saran wrap down on the outside of the lid. This is what you tank should be.
